TEACH International Inc. recently joined forces with an Adventist eye care team to to provide free eye examinations and cataract surgeries in Jallandhar, Punjab, India. This relief effort, headed by Dr. Jacob Prabaker of Ruby Nelson Memorial Adventist Hostpial in Jallandhar, is funded entirely by donations.
With 37 million blind people, India has 1/3 of the world's blind population. During the most recent eye camp, a large crowd of patients gathered early in the morning to see the one opthalmologist who had volunteered. In one day, Dr. Jacob Sudhakar removed cataracts from the eyes of 400 patients, out of 1,500 examined.
Area pastors visited with patients during their stay at the eye camp, praying for them and their families' welfare. After a final check up, patients received medications and dark eye glasses and were sent home with a prayer for full healing.
"Jesus never walked away from human suffering," says Kamnel S. D. Charles, executive director of TEACH International. "The challenge we have in India is tremendous, and when we try to meet the basic needs of the people, they will open doors and welcome us into their homes. 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.' (Matthew 5:16)"
TEACH Sight Restoration Ministry plans to take the eye care camps to as many places in India as possible over the next four months while the climate is conducive to performing surgeries.
